Money in the 1810s
Prices peaked during the last years of the Napoleonic Wars and then fell sharply after the victory at Waterloo in 1815. The Corn Laws of 1815 were passed to keep the price of grain, and so of bread, from falling too far.
Prices fell about 10% between 1810 and 1819. These figures compare the cost of everyday goods and services. Wages, house prices and the size of the economy all grew at different rates, so a 1810s salary or fortune would look bigger still if compared with what people earn or own today.
