About the florin

The two-shilling florin was introduced in 1849 as a tenth of a pound, an early step towards decimal money. The first design famously left out the words “Dei Gratia” (by the grace of God) and became known as the “Godless florin”. Florins carried on as 10p coins until 1993.

When it went: Used as 10p until 1993.
